SMEA is the voice of the materials community in South Yorkshire, with an extensive programme of activities centred on lectures, visits and encouragement of young materials scientists.

We are affiliates of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining and help to co-ordinate larger scale local events with other local branches of the professional engineering institutions.

Our Mission

We exist to promote and represent the materials' community in our region and beyond.

We do this by hosting meetings and events, running competitons and educational activities, and by supporting students and early stage practitioners in developing both personally and professionally.

How you can help

Donate

We are a registered charity and rely on fundraising, sponsorship and donations to continue our work.

You can also donate time to help with some of our outreach activities, and this is an area we are particularly keen to develop.

Engage

We aim to be the voice of the materials' community in the Sheffield City Region.

Our meetings are free to attend, and open to non-members. We always include opportunities to network and feel this is an important part of our mission.

Promote

We hope our lectures, on-line content, and events are useful in providing resources and opportunities to meet, but they are only part of what makes a materials community.

The more contact we can have, the better we will be able to represent the full breadth of materials interests in our region.

Please encourage people to engage with us, and help us to help as wide a section of people as possible.

Did you know?

The Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineer Association has its origins back in 1894 with the formation of the Sheffield Society of Engineers and Metallurgists. In 1917 a subsidiary group was formed, taking the title of Society of Metallurgists and Metallurgical Chemists, which changed its name in the early 1930’s to become the Sheffield Metallurgical Association.  By 1963, the activities of the older Sheffield Society of Engineers and Metallurgists and the Sheffield Metallurgical Association were so close that it was decided to amalgamate under the current title.

In November 1991, SMEA Events Limited was registered as a Private Limited Company to enable the SMEA to engage in commercial fund raising activities prior to becoming a Registered Charity and also a Private Limited Company in June 1993.

SMEA is affiliated to the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Help us continue our work

We no longer charge a membership fee in an effort to remove any perceived barriers to our community, but we would welcome donations to help us continue our work. We are a registered charity, so If you feel able to contribute a one off, annual or monthly donation, please get in touch.
